On #GivingTuesday, demand water justice

By

Everyone should be able to turn on the tap and have access to clean, safe water at rates they can afford. Yet people in the United States and around the world don’t have access to their basic human right to water.

Just look at Michigan, where residents of Detroit have seen the forces of private profit and corporate interests sweep through their city and state. The city is now treating water like a commodity, not a human right. People are receiving astronomical water bills — to the tune of hundreds of dollars. If they can’t pay, their water gets shut off — end of story. And a cascade of injustices follows: The state is taking away children and splitting up families. Or putting liens on homes, which can force people into foreclosure.

I know you’re with me in demanding that water be treated as human right — not a commodity to be bought and sold.

That’s why I’m writing you today. I knew you’d want to know that this #GivingTuesday, your gift for water justice in Michigan will be tripled. So your gift of $100 becomes $300! Help us support activists on the ground in Michigan to restore access to safe, affordable water in their communities.

We’ve set an ambitious goal to raise $10,000 this Giving Tuesday to help our allies and the people of Michigan in their ongoing campaign for their right to safe water. When you give right now, half of your gift will support Michigan Welfare Rights Organization’s campaign for water justice in Michigan, and half will power our global campaign for the human right to water. How will you pitch in to ensure we meet our goal?

The water crisis in Michigan is a fundamental matter of justice. While people — mainly people of color and low-income folks — are having their water shut off, the corporate-dominated state government has granted corporations like Nestlé access to extract clean water for profit at almost no cost. Our allies are organizing to change the system even while responding to their neighbors’ urgent needs for clean water. You can help give their campaigning a critical boost and ensure residents have access to the water they need to survive.

We’re joining with Michigan Welfare Rights Organization to advance the human right to water in Michigan. When you donate right now, your gift will support this movement and water justice for Michigan residents.

Michigan is a critical focal point in our global campaign to stop corporations from profiting from our water. And our partnership with Michigan Welfare Rights Organization is critical. They are doing phenomenal work organizing in their community. Join us in partnering with them.

This Giving Tuesday, you have the chance to support organizers on the ground as they demand the human right to safe water and democracy free from corporate clutches. Join in solidarity with the people of Michigan and help us reach the $10,000 goal before midnight on November 27!

P.S. Donate before midnight, November 27, and your gift will be matched two for one!
