Statement: GOP tax scam is of, by, and for corporations

BOSTON–Today, Republicans are expected to release the final language of their tax reform bill with the intention of voting on it early next week. The bill, the largest tax reform effort in nearly a generation, is centered around delivering immense cuts to corporations, a move that the majority of people in the U.S. do not support. Republican lawmakers have faced immense opposition for not only the measures within the bill — including opening the Arctic Wildlife Refuge in Alaska to oil and gas exploration — but also for the astonishing speed at which GOP lawmakers have pushed through this legislation.

Please see below Corporate Accountability Deputy Director: Campaigns Gigi Kellett’s statement:

The final tax bill language expected today is the latest example that Trump’s agenda is of, by, and for corporations and the wealthy few. Under the guise of tax reform, this bill will exacerbate inequality in this country — putting more money in the pockets of the few at the expense of the many. This tax scheme is a giveaway to the corporations and the monied elites that have lined up behind Donald Trump for personal gain and turned a blind eye to his administration’s racist, sexist and xenophobic policies and positions.

The details of the emerging deal that have been released will not only fail to help those who need it most, it would make healthcare more expensive for the ill, would open up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska to oil and gas extraction and could even make it more expensive for teachers to provide classroom supplies out of pocket. And because it will grow the deficit, it’s likely corporations and their proxies in Congress will try to leverage this bill to make devastating cuts to much-needed programs like Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. It’s a cruel bill with one goal: make corporations and the wealthy richer.

Congress must reject the GOP tax scam. It’s bad for our democracy, bad for people and bad for the planet.
