Statement: BAT purchases Reynolds, becoming largest tobacco transnational

Please see Senior International Organizer, Challenge Big Tobacco campaign Cloe Franko’s statement below:

“By purchasing Reynolds, British American Tobacco now surpasses Philip Morris International as the largest global tobacco transnational. Given multiple allegations of BAT engaging in bribery, calls from US members of Congress for a Department of Justice investigation, and bribery investigations underway in Kenya, the merger should raise serious questions for investors of both corporations. International regulators, as well as national-level lawmakers, should see today’s announcement as a clarion call to double-down on regulating the corporation, which has engaged in a slew of unlawful actions around the globe.”
